Virtualization
Virtualization is the process of abstracting hardware in order to allow the running of multiple operating systems on a single server
Benefits of virtualization
- Hardware costs are lower because servers are used to the maximum of their resources
- Server provisioning time is reduced
- Physical access to a server is not necessary anymore, the server can be managed from anywhere in the world
- Sizing studies are facilitated
- Virtual machine snapshots can be migrated, which automatically increases the level of high availability of the VMs
- It is easy and cost-effective to create one virtual server per service, thus increasing separation of services and security
- Change management is facilitated thanks to snapshots and easy rollbacks
- Datacenter management is facilitated because hardware intervention does not lead to service downtime
