Xen

Open Source virtualization technology

Xen logo

Xen is a virtual machine hypervisor. Just like VMware, it allows the running of totally independent virtual machines on the same physical hardware. Unlike VMware, the technology used is completely different. Xen reaches near-native performance (1 to 2% overhead), which is comparable to VMware ESX performance, and much faster than VMware Server or Workstation.

Xen is maintained by an active Open Source community and has support from a large number of major industrial players (IBM, Intel, HP, Novell, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems). XenSource, the company dedicated to the development of Xen and founded by Xen's project leader, has recently been acquired by Citrix.

Product features

  • Xen can virtualize the following operating systems: Linux 2.6, Solaris 10, NetBSD. Since version 3, the support of Intel's VT and AMD's Pacifica extensions allow the virtualization of Windows XP and 2003 Server.
  • Xen performance is near-native, because the technology used implies that the guest operating system is aware of Xen's presence and has been ported for Xen.
  • Xen allows the suspension of virtual machines, live migration of VMs from one physical server to another without service interruption, and the creation of virtual or bridged networks.
