Editorial

As announced in our previous issue, our training catalogue for the first semester of 2010 is now completed and available. We reviewed and updated our entire training offer, which now includes Linux, Business Intelligence and Websites training courses and workshops.

Among the major evolutions, our courses preparing to LPI certifications include the latest official objectives, and we have introduced new courses for Business Intelligence in response to a strong demand. Additionnaly, new practical workshops have been introduced around Linux and website creation.

Linalis News

Welcoming a new employee

After a successful internship at Linalis, we are delighted to welcome Aminata Toure as a junior BI Consultant starting from February. Aminata will work on report writing and dashboard building projects for our clients thanks to her excellent combination of knowledge of Open Source BI tools such as Pentaho, Jasper and Talend, and her ability to understand business management requirements.

Linalis becomes Swiss Hosting and Services Provider for DataSync Suite

Linalis starts a partnership with VNC, the master distributor for the DataSync Suite in EMEA, as a hosting and services provider. DataSync Suite unifies key business applications such as Zimbra Collaboration Suite, Quickbooks accounting software and the Drupal CMS with single sign-on and automatic synchronisation of customer information between these applications.

Services

Swissport, the leading European infrastructure and ground services provider for airports, talks about its choice of the Open Source Pentaho BI Suite to replace Oracle's proprietary solution. Linalis was selected to assist them in the migration process. Read the press release.

The FDI World Dental Federation recently launched a new version of their website, using Drupal. Linalis migrated their website from a static file based one - and it opens new possibilities for them. Read the success story.

Training

We are receiving a growing demand for custom made training courses around Linux, most of them in parallel to a Linux implementation project. Thus, we gave a 4 days custom made training course for a public administration in the canton of Valais and two new courses are planned with a school in the canton of Vaud and an university in France. These training courses give customers maximum flexibility : delivered on-site, they are adapted to the customer's specific needs and have immediate and concrete applications. Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to benefit from these courses!

Concerning upcoming training courses, our next Pentaho Bootcamp, which takes place in Frankfurt late February, is now full. However please refer to our planning for the dates of the next sessions.

LPI and Novell partner on Linux certifications

The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) and Novell agreed on a partnership to standardise their entry-level Linux certification programs on LPIC-1. Under this program, Linux professionals who have earned their LPIC-1 status will also satisfy the requirements for the Novell® Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) certification. In addition, Novell will include LPIC-1 learning objectives in its CLA course training material.

Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition 3.5.2

We're pleased to announce that Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition 3.5.2 is now generally available for production use. This is a maintenance release that improves performance and introduces enhancement to Pentaho Reporting and Pentaho Analysis. This release builds upon the recent new Pentaho Analyser, that creates an easy to use and attractive user interface for business users to perform powerful OLAP driven analysis with minimal overhead required from IT resources.

Acquia

Drupal Gardens

Acquia launches Drupal Gardens, an online services for creating and customising Drupal powered websites. One can use it as a SaaS service or can export the websites one just created to implement them on one's own servers. The service is in beta state.

Acquia issued a whitepaper about Total Cost of Ownership of CMS and Social Publishing tools, comparing a variety of Open Source and proprietary products in a detailed report. The document can be downloaded for free (registration needed).

Zimbra joins VMware

After 2 years at Yahoo!, Zimbra was bought by VMware. The virtualisation giant plans to further develop the product and to use Zimbra in prepackaged virtual appliances and in cloud computing offers.

Canonical : Matt Asay joins as COO

Matt Asay is leaving Alfresco to take over the role of Chief Executive Officer (COO) at Canonical. Matt Asay a well-known proponent of Open Source and an editor on its website The Open Road. At Alfresco, Matt Asay was in charge of Business Development. At Canonical, he will mainly be in charge of operations and marketing.

Alfresco switches to LGPL

Alfresco changed the license of its document management product, from GNU GPL to the more permissive GNU LGPL. They are aiming at make it easier to use Alfresco as a platform on top of which other companies will develop custom products.

Oracle/Sun 

European Commission finally approved Sun Microsystems' buyout by Oracle. Java is clearly the main reason for the deal, since Oracle announced numerous improvements to it. Other Sun's main projects will continue to be developed and promoted (Solaris, MySQL, OpenOffice.org, Glassfish, Netbeans...).

Samba as Active Directory server

Samba is already a widely used product for integration into Microsoft Windows networks. But Samba 4.0, currently in alpha state, will also be able to act as an Active Directory server. It opens new perspectives since it won't be mandatory anymore to use Microsoft Active Directory for applications using Active Directory, such as Exchange. A feature to track closely.
